Nymphs - The Underwater life Stage of Many Insects

Nymphs are the underwater life stage of many insects, including mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies. During this phase, they remain submerged, feeding and growing until they’re ready to transition into adults. As they mature, nymphs shed their exoskeleton and rise to the surface, where they’ll emerge as winged adults.

In fly fishing, this stage is crucial to understand, as many fish feed heavily on nymphs. Matching the hatch—selecting a fly pattern that closely resembles the nymphs currently in the water—can greatly increase success. Nymphing techniques often involve sub-surface fishing with weighted flies, imitating the movement and behavior of these aquatic insects. By targeting nymphs, anglers can fish throughout the year, as they remain active even when surface hatches are minimal.
